Ezra: The exile ends

Around the middle of the sixth century BCE, during the Zhou dynasty in China and the rule of the dictators in Athens, when Carthage was a major power in the western Mediterranean and the Celts ruled Europe and the Olmecs Central America, Cyrus the Great of Persia conquered Babylon. Following a conciliatory policy designed to win over subject peoples, Cyrus decreed that the Jews would be allowed to return to Jerusalem and its environs and to rebuild the Temple. He even let them take the costly Temple goods that were still intact.
